To celebrate 2022 Lunar New Year, Very Handsome Studio wants to share a fun art and craft activity that anyone could try and add to their Luna NY Decoration.
Step 1: Cut out your shape on the indicated dotted line.
Step 2: Turn the cut piece upside down.
Step 3: Start to curve each petal back. This will help later on when pinching together the top and sealing the entire lantern together.
Step 4: Use a push pin or needle to create holes at the designated center circle. Poke your tassel through the center hole and tie a knot so it doesn't escape. To make your own tassel, Martha Stewart has a great DIY for fashionable tassels.
Step 5: Poke your tassel through the center hole and tie a knot so it doesn't escape. Make sure you leave some room before knotting it off so your tassel has room to hang and flow in the wind.
Step 6: Use a push pin or needle to create holes at the designated circles on your template.
Step 7: Tie off a long piece of thread or string on a needle and begin poking through the created outer holes, starting on the back/white side out. Whichever petal you begin with will be your top petal at the end.
Step 8: Continue poking through the holes in sequential order, always starting on the back/white side and ending at the front/colored side. You should come full circle to your first hole to which you will poke through again in the same pattern, starting on the back/white side and ending on the front/colored side.
Step 9: Once all holes are poked through and you're back at where you started, pull hard, making sure the flaps lay in the order you poked your holes in. This step's difficulty is dependent on how much you curved your petals at the beginning. The curvier the petals, the easier the lantern will come together.
Step 10: Once all the petals have come together and pulled tight, tie a knot at the top as close to the top hole as possible to make sure these petals do not come undone.
Ta da! Your lantern is complete! Hang these throughout your home to welcome luck and prosperity in the new year.
